Do you need Assistance?

Sunflower/Humphreys Counties Progress, Inc. will be conducting interviews (BY APPOINTMENT ONLY) to provide lighting, gas, propane and water assistance from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. MONDAY, MARCH 21 at Town of Sunflower, 103 Quiver Street, Sunflower, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on TUESDAY, MARCH 22 at Town of Doddsville, 3077A Highway 49, Doddsville. Please call 662-887-1431 to schedule your appointment. The documents required to determine approval are:


• Photo ID for all household members aged 18 and over.

• Social security cards for all household members.

INVOICES (most recent):

• Invoices must be in the name of the head of the family or the spouse.

• Bills must show your current residential service address.

PROOF OF INCOME (if applicable):

• Most recent payslips

• Income from social security, pension, etc.

SOS for healing


The monthly “Safe Online Space (SOS) for Healing Conversations” local online chat session for victims/survivors of sexual assault will be held from 6-7 p.m. on MONDAY, MARCH 21. The topic of discussion will be “You are not alone – Breaking the silence.” Victims and/or survivors can log on to to join the session (click on an SOS link and then on the word “chat”). Our House, Inc.’s 24-hour crisis hotline number is 662-332-5683 (LOVE) – local or 833-279-5683 (LOVE) – toll-free.

Attention Child Care Providers

You have the opportunity to get up to 10 contact hours virtually through the Creating Healthy Indoor Childcare Environments program. The course starts on MONDAY MARCH 21 and ends on SUNDAY APRIL 24. THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS MARCH 21ST. This course is a 5-week online course via Canvas, and every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. there will be a live teaching session facilitated by an extension officer on each learning module. There are also self-paced assignments for each module. Each participant will receive up to 10 contact hours for attending this course. Private applicator training

The Sunflower County MSU Extension Service will be offering private applicator training sessions beginning at 9 a.m. THURSDAY, MARCH 24. A $20 per person fee is charged for the Private Applicator Certification Program. A check payable to MSU-ES is the preferred method of payment – NO CASH. Call 662-887-4601 for more information.

BeSMART: control your diabetes

The BeSMART: Control Your Diabetes program continues on a healthy path in 2022. Join them at the BB King Museum for a healthy lunch and information gathering from 12-1 p.m. the 4th THURSDAY of each month (next date: MARCH 24). They ask that you please bring pre-assessment numbers (blood pressure, blood sugar, A1C) if possible. Women’s History Month/Black History


The Dorothy I. Height Quad Counties Chapter of the National Council of Black Women will be presenting their virtual Women’s History Month/Black History program at 3 p.m. on SUNDAY, MARCH 27. MDEEP Technology Award

Mississippi Delta Equitable Education Project (MDEEP), a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit working in the Mississippi Delta, will award a select group of senior graduates a technology package that includes a personal laptop computer, printer, and toner . Chamber mixer

The annual Indianola Chamber Main Street Mixer will be held MONDAY, APRIL 4 at the BB King Museum beginning at 5:30 p.m. Please plan to attend as they honor the top community and education winners of 2021 and celebrate the winner this year’s Morris Lewis. , Jr. Citizen of the Year.

ServSafe® Food Safety Course

Attention: Restaurant owners, managers and/or employees who need ServSafe® certification! The ServSafe® Food Safety Course will be offered in Indianola from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. TUESDAY, APRIL 19 at the Extension Office, 112 South MLK Dr., Indianola. Cost is $140 per person and space is limited—register today. If you have any questions or would like registration information, please contact Ann Twiner, MSU-Extension Agent at 662-887-1901. Don’t put your foodservice businesses at risk while waiting to be ServSafe® certified. This class is held in the upstairs auditorium of the Sunflower County Extension. If you need special accommodations, please let them know two weeks in advance.

Teacher workshops

Sunflower and Humphreys Counties Soil and Water Conservation Districts will host four teacher workshops this summer: a “Foods from the Soil” environmental education teacher workshop (June 6-10); a “Turn Up Green” workshop for environmental education teachers (JUNE 13-17); an environmental education teachers’ workshop “Field P’s” (11-15 JULY); and a “Delta Gumbo” environmental education workshop for teachers (July 18-22). Each workshop will last 50 hours (MF – 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and 5 CEUs. All credits and teaching materials are free. Contact Tammy Kitchens at 662-207-8264 to register.

Sunflower Humphreys Counties Progress, Inc. announces that it is once again the Sponsoring Agency for the USDA Summer Feeding Program. All churches and organizations sponsoring summer feeding programs for children ages 1-18 are eligible to participate. We can provide your children with two meals a day, breakfast and lunch.
