Education Minister Francis Fonseca thanks Taiwan for scholarships for Belizean students

By Ruben Morales Iglesias: “The MOFA and ICDF Taiwan Scholarship Program is one of the most attractive and popular scholarship programs in Belize today. There is a great demand for these scholarships,” Education Minister Francis Fonseca said Friday morning during the orientation ceremony for 52 Belizean students who received university scholarships from the Taiwan government.

“On behalf of the Government of Belize and the Ministry of Education, I wish to express our deepest gratitude, appreciation to the Government and people of the Republic of China – Taiwan for their unwavering and unwavering commitment to Belize’s growth and development. through meaningful investments in our people, meaningful investments in education,” said Minister Fonseca.

“This program is an excellent example of the strong, dynamic and mutually beneficial relationship that Belize and Taiwan enjoy.”

Minister Fonseca also acknowledged that Taiwan also supports Belize’s ongoing Connect Education project, which aims to extend reliable internet services to schools across the country.

Thirty-nine students received scholarships from the Taiwan Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) and 13 received scholarships from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan (MOFA).

The students gathered Friday morning at Belize Biltmore Plaza for an orientation before they depart for Taiwan soon.

“We are very proud of the hundreds of Belizeans who have received a world-class education in Taiwan,” Fonseca said as he encouraged the students to take advantage of the opportunity presented to them.

“Our scholarship recipients will join an elite group today,” he said.

“Congratulations to each of you and your families for being awarded this wonderful scholarship opportunity,” said the Minister of Education.

“As others have told you, please take full advantage of this unique opportunity. Remember at all times that you are the representatives of Belize in Taiwan. Respect the people of Taiwan, respect their culture. Seize the opportunity to to learn a new language, to learn, as the Special Envoy said, a new culture, new foods and also new drinks.

“Explore the beautiful country of Taiwan. Make new friends, so don’t just hang out with Belizeans. Make new friends, make new friends in Taiwan.

Minister Fonseca also told them that they would have support from the Belize Student Association and the Belize Embassy in Taiwan.

“There’s a great student association in Belize. We met them when we were in Taiwan earlier this year. A great association waiting to meet you and support you in every way,” he said.

“The Belize Embassy in Taiwan, as you have seen, represented by Her Excellency, Ambassador Candice Pitts, is also here to support and accompany you on this new journey.”

In closing, Minister Fonseca told the students who will soon be leaving for Taiwan to work hard.

“Work hard, stay focused and enjoy your time in Taiwan,” he said.
