Family Promise of Midland, newly built duplexes ready for homeless families

MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) – Family Promise of Midland is helping homeless families turn their lives around with a program that provides them with transitional housing.

“We had a family move, I believe it was March 17, it was our first family and we continue to get calls from families,” said general manager Tom Miller.

Family Promises Forward Transitional are five new fully furnished duplexes that just opened this week. Families can live there for up to two years.

To qualify for the housing program, families must be homeless, have at least one dependent child under the age of 18, and be willing to work with a case manager to increase their level of self-sufficiency.

“Adults have to work full time, go to school full time, or a combination of both. We provide free child care, we provide all the utilities in these duplexes, our families pay a program fee but it’s minimal because we want them to have some skin in the game,” said said Miller.

Of the five duplexes, four have already been allocated or are hosting families.

Family Promise says the project comes only after the help of many people who came together to make this dream come true.

“The Midland community has really stepped up, many local foundations have helped fund this project, as well as individuals, congregations and businesses,” Miller said.

Family Promise of Midland currently owns and operates three other duplex communities throughout the city.
