Robert Stilwell, PhD




Robert (Rob) Stilwell passed away peacefully from natural causes at Hearthstone Health Campus in Bloomington, Indiana on October 19, 2021. Born in 1933, he survived his mother, Nellie Mae Best Stilwell, and his adoptive father, Charles Stilwell. Rob never married.

He resided in Columbus, Indiana and, more recently, Bloomington. Rob graduated from Columbus North High School in 1951 and worked on the Cummins assembly line for three years, until he could study at Indiana University (AB in English in 1957) and at Ohio State (Ph.D. in 1965). He became an assistant professor of English at the University of Michigan and then returned to Columbus, Indiana, to care for his mother.

Never far from a university, he became an assistant lecturer at IUPUC (Indiana University, Purdue University Columbus) where he taught poetry and composition.

Rob deeply loved his students, staff and other professors at IUPUC. He was a remarkable poet and scholar, and an aficionado of all kinds of music (classical, folk and rock).

When Rob fell very ill and was hospitalized with a seasonal flu followed by several episodes of pneumonia, he sold his house, entrusted his beloved dog Dusty to an excellent caregiver, was transferred to an estate of nursing homes and, finally, in an assisted living facility. installation in Bloomington.

With no living relatives, Rob allowed a few of his former colleagues to act as health care representatives and attorneys. In addition to his POAs, he acquired a “family” of three other former colleagues who kept in touch through visits and phone calls, and annual birthday celebrations when he enjoyed giving readings from his. poetry.

According to Rob’s wishes, he will not have an official funeral; her ashes will be buried in the plot next to her mother’s grave at Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus.
