Where can I take my children during the Christmas holidays?

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – A lot of kids are looking forward to school breaks for the holidays. For their parents, it can create financial difficulties when it comes to finding a daycare center, but there are some programs to help them.

Charleston Parks and Recreation has several community centers that they keep open for long hours for children who need a place to go during the day during the Christmas holidays while their parents are at work.

“We try to do a lot of things for free so parents don’t have to worry about any kind of financial obligation,” said Rashaun Sayles, director of parks and recreation in Charleston. The city offers many opportunities for students to spend time with friends and to exercise.

“We have arts and crafts, there are social games, you can go to the gym and play basketball,” said Corey Lowery, program coordinator at the North Charleston Community Center.

The city and a program called Step by Step are stepping up to provide options for parents.

“At night is the worst time for students to go out on the streets. There’s a lot going on, especially in our community right now, ”said Cassidy Bailey, Kanawha County Director of Programs for Step by Step. “So we’re opening our center and through our partnership with Charleston Parks and Recreation we’ve also opened a few of these facilities to provide a safe space for students to get off the streets and have a caring adult ready to sit and To listen. for them.”

More downtime with children during the day gives them the opportunity to form deeper bonds.

“The parents are still working and the kids are at home and they have a lot of free time, so parents love the idea of being able to drop them off in a safe environment, a safe place where they can learn and be active,” Sayles says.

The city will also be hosting activities next week, including an urban fishing event where kids can fish in one of the city’s swimming pools.
